During the General Debate under item 5 of the 60th session of the Human Rights Council, the Network for the Development of Mauritania voiced concerns regarding Algeria’s cooperation with UN human rights mechanisms, particularly in relation to the Tindouf camps.
Speaking on behalf of the NGO, Mr. Abdelouahab Brahim Gain stated that Algeria has not fully implemented recommendations relating to the prevention of torture, enforced disappearances, summary executions, and arbitrary detention, with reference to the situation in the Tindouf camps.
The organization also noted what it described as Algeria’s reluctance to engage with special procedures and its repeated disregard of calls addressing alleged violations occurring on its territory, including within the Tindouf camps.
In its statement, the Network for the Development of Mauritania urged Algeria to cooperate with UN mandate holders and allow investigations into cases of extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances, and torture affecting Algerians, migrants, and Sahrawi residents of the camps. It further called on the Human Rights Council to encourage Algeria to ratify the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance.
