U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a strong warning to Nigeria, threatening possible military action over what he described as “horrible atrocities” committed against Christians. The statement, shared Saturday on his social media platform, accused the Nigerian government of failing to protect its Christian population and instructed the recently renamed Department of War to “prepare for possible action.”

Trump declared that the United States would immediately suspend all aid to Nigeria if authorities “continue to allow the killing of Christians.” He went further, suggesting that the U.S. “may very well go into that now disgraced country, guns blazing, to completely wipe out the Islamic terrorists” responsible for what he called “unspeakable crimes.” “If we attack, it will be fast, vicious, and sweet — just like the terrorist thugs attack our cherished Christians,” Trump wrote, adding a warning to the Nigerian government to “move fast.”

The Nigerian government has denied allegations of anti-Christian violence and has yet to issue an official response to the president’s remarks.

The outburst came a day after Trump announced that Nigeria had been placed on the U.S. State Department’s “Countries of Particular Concern” list, which monitors violations of religious freedom worldwide. The decision follows growing pressure from right-wing U.S. lawmakers and Christian advocacy groups, who claim that ongoing conflicts in Nigeria constitute a “Christian genocide.”.

Meanwhile, observers in Nigeria have described Trump’s comments as “reckless and dangerous”, arguing that they oversimplify a complex web of ethnic, political, and economic conflicts that go beyond religion.
