Morocco and Ethiopia have signed a new security agreement on the sidelines of the 93rd General Assembly of Interpol, which opened on Monday in Marrakech. The memorandum of understanding was signed by Abdellatif Hammouchi, Director General of National Security and Territorial Surveillance, and the Commissioner General of the Ethiopian Federal Police.

The agreement establishes a framework for operational, intelligence and technical cooperation aimed at combating violent crime and organized criminal networks that threaten the security of both countries.

According to a statement from Morocco’s General Directorate of National Security (DGSN), the memorandum provides a reference framework for bilateral collaboration in the security field. It enables the exchange of expertise, operational experience, information and technical assistance, with the goal of improving the understanding and effective response to all forms of organized crime that could target either nation.

Under the agreement, Moroccan security services will provide Ethiopia with support in training, technical assistance and intelligence cooperation. This will help Ethiopian police authorities strengthen their human resources and enhance their capacity to prevent and combat criminal activity.

The DGSN added that the agreement outlines several priority areas, including the fight against human trafficking, irregular migration, organ trafficking, drug and psychotropic substance smuggling, illicit trade in weapons, explosives and hazardous materials, cybercrime, financial and economic crime, and money laundering. The deal also covers any additional fields deemed to be of shared interest.

Following the signing ceremony, bilateral talks were held between Hammouchi and the Commissioner General of the Ethiopian Federal Police. The discussions reviewed the current state of security cooperation between Morocco and Ethiopia and explored ways to further strengthen the partnership in order to reinforce shared security interests and consolidate joint efforts.
