Morocco moved a step closer to the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after securing a deserved 1-0 victory over Scotland on Friday at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, near Boston, in the second round of Group C matches.

The decisive goal came from Ismael Saibari just 71 seconds into the game, earning the Atlas Lions their first win of the tournament following a 1-1 draw against Brazil in their opening match.

Saibari’s Goal Sets Multiple Records

Saibari’s strike after just 70 seconds became the fastest winning goal ever scored in a World Cup match that ended 1-0. The previous record belonged to England, whose winning goal against Paraguay in 2006 was scored in the third minute.

The Moroccan midfielder’s effort also became the second-fastest goal ever scored by an African player at a World Cup. Only Ghana’s Asamoah Gyan found the net sooner, scoring after 68 seconds against the Czech Republic in 2006. Saibari’s goal is now the fastest ever scored by an Arab player in World Cup history.

The 23-year-old also became only the second African player to score in each of his first two World Cup appearances, following Egyptian star Mohamed Salah.

Moroccan Dominance

Morocco completed 601 successful passes during the match, the highest total ever recorded by an African team in a World Cup game since statistics began being tracked in 1966.

The victory was Morocco’s sixth in World Cup history, drawing level with Ghana and Nigeria as the most successful African nations in terms of tournament wins.

Playmaker Brahim Díaz registered his second assist of the competition, becoming only the second Moroccan player to provide more than one assist at a single World Cup, following Tahar El Khalej, who recorded three assists in 1998.

Eighteen-year-old Ayyoub Bouaddi also entered the history books. At 18 years and 260 days old, he became only the fourth African player aged 18 or younger to feature in multiple World Cup matches, joining Rigobert Song, Salomon Olembe and Bartholomew Ogbeche.

Díaz and Saibari have now combined for two goals during this tournament, making them only the second African duo to produce two goal-assist combinations involving the same players at a single World Cup, after Senegal’s Henri Camara and Papa Bouba Diop in 2002.

Hakimi Becomes Africa’s Most-Capped World Cup Player

Achraf Hakimi also achieved a historic milestone by becoming the Arab and African player with the most appearances in FIFA World Cup history.

The Moroccan captain made his 12th World Cup appearance against Scotland, surpassing the previous record of 11 matches shared by Cameroon’s François Omam-Biyik and Ghana’s Asamoah Gyan.

Scotland’s Difficult Night

For Scotland, the defeat extended a worrying trend. The Scots have now lost 17 of their last 19 matches against teams ranked in FIFA’s top six at the time of the encounter, managing only one victory and one draw.

It was also the first time Scotland had conceded within the opening two minutes of a major international tournament match. Their previous earliest goals conceded came in the fourth minute against Paraguay at the 1958 World Cup and against Brazil in 1998.

Adding to the disappointment, Scotland’s starting lineup entered the match with a combined total of 609 international appearances, the highest cumulative experience in the nation’s history.
