Twelve people were killed on Tuesday in a suicide bombing outside a courthouse in Islamabad, according to Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi.
The attack occurred in the Kachehri judicial district, a high-security area of the capital where several courts and administrative institutions are located. Speaking to reporters at the scene, the minister confirmed that 12 people had been killed and 27 others wounded, some critically.
Security forces immediately cordoned off the area and emergency services transported the injured to nearby hospitals. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, but Islamabad has witnessed sporadic violence in recent years linked to militant groups operating in the region.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine how the attacker reached the vicinity of the courthouse, and security protocols in judicial districts are expected to be reviewed.
