At least 11 people were killed and dozens injured after an explosion struck a Shiite mosque in Islamabad, Pakistan, on Friday, according to local police sources cited by Agence France-Presse (AFP).
A senior police official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the blast occurred shortly after Friday prayers inside the mosque. “An explosion took place in a Shiite mosque. So far, 11 people have been killed and 20 others injured,” the official stated.
Local authorities later reported a higher number of casualties, indicating that more than 80 people sustained injuries of varying severity. Emergency services were immediately dispatched to the scene, and the wounded were transported to nearby hospitals.
Security forces cordoned off the area as investigators began examining the circumstances of the attack. No group has so far claimed responsibility, and authorities have not yet released details regarding the nature of the explosion.
Attacks targeting religious sites have periodically shaken Pakistan, particularly those aimed at Shiite communities, amid ongoing security challenges linked to militant violence.
